Organizational charts are real heroes when it comes to visualising hierarchies more clearly. A good organigram makes complex structures easier to understand.

What are organizational charts and why do we need them?

Simply put, an organizational chart is responsible for creating an overview of hierarchies and responsibilities. It is a combination of two words, namely organization and chart. Organizational charts can be easily created in PowerPoint using SmartArt. Organizational charts are particularly helpful when a new employee is in the onboarding process and needs a visualisation of the hierarchies of the company. The organizational chart ensures that both employees and as well as customers can always turn to the right position.

How to create organizational charts

In PowerPoint it's really easy to insert an organizational chart. With just a few clicks, you can make even larger hierarchies and responsibilities easy to understand.

  1. Start Powerpoint and open the desired presentation in which you want to insert the organizational chart. Now create a new slide.
  2. Go to "Insert" and select "SmartArt". Find smartart
  3. Now go to "Hierarchy". In this section there are all possible organizational charts you can choose between.
    Most favorite organization charts
    • Organization Chart
A very normal, simply built organizational chart. Recommended for small responsibilities.

    • Picture Organization Chart
Also a normal organizational chart only with pictures. Good for corporate hierarchies.

    • Name und Title Organization Chart
Very good for showing hierarchies in higher ranks.

    • Half Circle Organization Chart
They differ from the original organizational chart only in appearance.

    • Horizontal Organization Chart
A horizontal orientation of an organizational chart.

  4. Once you have selected your desired form, start filling the placeholder text with your text by clicking in the field and entering your desired text. Change text of organization chart
  5. You can edit everything, starting with the text but also the design of the organizational chart.
  6. If you want to change the order of the organizational chart, you can do it in the "SmartArt Design" tab. Change the design of a organization chart

.ppsm file extension

A .ppsm file is a macro-enabled PowerPoint slideshow that opens directly in presentation mode and supports embedded VBA macros. It combines the instant-launch behavior of .ppsx files with the automation capabilities of macro-enabled formats. This makes .ppsm files useful for interactive or automated presentations, though they carry the same security considerations as other macro-enabled Office formats.

Classroom Communication System (CCS)

A classroom communication system is a technology platform that enables real-time two-way interaction between instructor and students during a class or presentation. It typically supports live polls, Q&A, quizzes, and feedback tools accessible via student devices. By facilitating ongoing dialogue rather than one-way delivery, classroom communication systems increase participation, surface misunderstandings early, and create a more dynamic learning environment for both in-person and hybrid settings.

AI Agent

An AI agent is a software system that perceives its environment, reasons over context, and autonomously takes actions to achieve a defined goal — without requiring a human to trigger each individual step. Unlike a chatbot that responds to a single prompt, an AI agent plans, executes multi-step tasks, uses tools, and adapts based on the results it observes. AI agents can operate independently or as part of larger multi-agent systems, and are increasingly embedded in enterprise software to automate complex workflows across departments.

Normal view (slide view)

Normal View is the default editing mode in Microsoft PowerPoint. It displays the current slide in the center panel, a thumbnail panel on the left for navigating between slides, and a notes panel at the bottom for speaker notes. Normal View is where most presentation editing takes place — adding content, formatting text, inserting images, and adjusting layouts. It provides a clear, work-focused interface for building and refining individual slides.
